Alpine Stay

[ OVERVIEW ]

This nacelle once operated in a coastal wind farm in Western France before being repurposed by OUT & ABOUT and anchored high above the Chamonix valley as a fully autonomous alpine stay. Positioned above the treeline, it faces glacier air, shifting weather and exposed mountain silence.

Reaching it requires a demanding 9-kilometre ascent with significant elevation gain; snowshoes in winter, alpine trail in late season. Conditions can be harsh and navigation is essential.

Inside, the nacelle is engineered for altitude — insulated, secure and minimal, providing heat, water and shelter.
This stay is not about spectacle. It is about clarity.

This stay is not designed to impress. It is built for presence

Wake up above the clouds - chamonix in a nacelle

MOUNTAIN CONDITIONS

Alpine terrain with steep ascent and shifting weather. Thin air, snow or ice likely depending on season. Requires stable physical condition.

Food & water

No food or service access in the area. Guests bring their own supplies. Water is glacial or filtered through the cabin’s built-in system.

ALTITUDE & EXPOSURE

Set above the treeline with full mountain exposure. Long sightlines, no shelter from weather. You are fully in alpine conditions from arrival onward.

CABIN EXPERIENCE

Self-sustaining nacelle adapted for elevation. Heated, insulated, secure — but minimal. Built for recovery after effort, not for convenience.

Route overview

Chamonix - France

Arrival is earned through elevation. The route climbs steadily from treeline to exposed alpine terrain — where thinner air and weather decide tempo more than distance.

  • ±9 km one way

  • 1,000+ m steep elevation

  • Alpine hiking route, rock and snow exposure, above treeline

  • Summer: hiking only
Winter: alpine snow & ice, winter equipment required
